I have a morning routine, for those mornings when I go to work: Wake up at an ungodly early hour, run, put on some coffee, and then browse the internet — read news, webcomics, blogs, etc.

Well, this morning (last night, really) I decided that I would try to blog this — share with you what I discover on the internet each morning. Here’s hoping it’s interesting …

Someone has calculated what is being called “the carbon cost of Googling.” I dislike this. It should be “the carbon cost of a web search”. In practical terms, as the industry leader Google gets to employ economies of scale their competitors cannot, and probably delivers their service at a lower environmental cost (ie, using less electricity — I haven’t commissioned a study on the way competitors’ grids are powered, or anything) than most of their competitors. So unless you know of a search engine that runs (and cools) their servers using renewable energy (something Google is investigating), you will likely incur a larger carbon footprint by choosing a different engine.
