The morning coffee tries not to invade your privacy
This morning, I find myself tempted to post news about Bear Spray or an angry chimpanzee. I will resist, however, and tell you about the battle between journalism and privacy, which I find to be completely fascinating. It is more than a little annoying and offensive that newspapers print endless stories about the would-be-secret lives of public figures — are these really supposed to be the big issues of the day? Is this really newsworthy? I am curious as to who actually cares about these things — although I am sure they are out there.
In that sense, I would very much like Mr. Mosley’s crusade to change things. I like my news to be a mix of the pertinent, intellectually stimulating and bizarre. The sex life of [Insert Celebrity Here] is unwanted, at least by me. However, I am aware that none of that makes Mr. Mosley’s position correct. As much as it may be used for sales-driving drivel, a journalist’s right to uncover secret things in the life of a person of public importance is key to the value that newspapers can and should provide.
Continuing down a similar road, we touch some more on the Facebook Terms of Service. Mashable provides a reaction which is insightful. My impression is that Facebook is growing increasingly inhospitable through the way they advertise and handle content.
From the world of blogs, Craftzine tells us about the photographic dictionary (which can be found here. The problem is that it is done all wrong. What needs to be done is a photo version of wiktionary, a photo wiki-dictionary. It would be awesome. And I will admit right now that I am tempted to set it up. Anybody have a lot of extra time they could lend me?
