Looking for an apocalypse?
Well, you’ll have to look further than December 2012.

I’m not one to believe in ancient Mayan prophecies surrounding the end of the world, but even so it was quite entertaining to read this complete obliteration of the whole concept earlier this week.
Well, it turns out that the Maya calendar counts up to the year 63 million (or so), and the whole thing is based on a guy who knew nothing about the Mayans (or their calendars) misinterpreting them and deciding that if the Mayans didn’t bother planning for December 22, 2012, the world would clearly be coming to an end.
So … yeah. But it led to another Hollywood disaster movie, so it’s OK. Right?
Pictured above is what is often called “the Mayan calendar”.
Which is actually Aztec.
And not a calendar.
But it looks good, right? (The Aztecs apparently called themselves “Mexica”, but that would make it “Mexican”, which I just find confusing.)
