The weekend coffee, cat armour and turtle sharks

I would not be surprised if some of the readers of the Big Bad Blog immediately leave the site to check out the cost of plane tickets to New York, on discovery that there will be Doctor Who themed burlesque.
Some of the advice being given about being sensitive to the different customs of foreigners in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics is hilarious.

For instance, when speaking with Mexicans, avoid mentioning their war with America in 1845-6.

Why would I start a conversation with a random Mexican on that particular topic?

Science discovers what is being called a Life of Brian effect in the human brain. Not terribly interesting, other than the name being awesome.
Apparently having sexual relations with a mannequin in a public park is not legal in West Virginia.

Who knew?

A porn star showing pubic hair causing a backlash?

You wouldn’t think so, but apparently that’s what happened after Sasha Grey went nude on HBO’s Entourage

There’s been lots on baby names in our coffee this week — a trend that we’re continuing over the weekend.

Your name also has an effect on what you do and where you live. Denises become dentists, Louises tend to live in St Louis. And so on.

I’m generally not a fan of arguments that would not convince anybody. After all — the point of arguing something is to convince somebody (even if that somebody is yourself).

But I can’t help but enjoying the argument that gay marriage is good because it brings us closer to a Sci Fi utopia.

German radioactive boars are running amok.

If you need proof that the UK’s libel laws are over-the-top, check out the manner in which criticisms of a person’s behaviour need to be expressed, in order to avoid lawsuits.
As a denizen of the Internet, you are no doubt aware of that annoying quiz in which your own writing is compared to famous authors. But be aware that it is flawed:

Input some Lovecraft, and it will identify it as Orwell-like.

Input some Orwell, and it will be identified as being similar to Margaret Mitchell.

Remember a few weeks ago when we linked to scaremongering over methane releases from the BP oil spill? Well, now the scaremongering has gone even more extreme — to doomsday scenarios!

Of course, these do not stand up to scrutiny. But excellent scaremongering nonetheless!

Historians say that they have located King Arthur’s table. And here I was thinking that King Arthur was just a myth.

Are the stories about Merlin true, too?

It has been shown everywhere I look on the Internet. Everywhere. But I will still link to it, because I continue to love absolutely everything that Improv Everywhere does.
Need a place to crash for a month? Like museums? Then apply to live at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry for a month.

Oh, you get paid, too.

On the downside, you’ll be expected to write. Scary.

The morning coffee, space suits and slug dares

May 25th, 2010 No comments

I am not entirely sure why the powers that be are trying to prevent the occurrence of Burlesque Wrestling in Seattle, but if it ever comes to London, I promise to buy a ticket.

(A man in an AX3 spacesuit from 1977)

An Australian is near death after accepting a dare to eat a slug. Which is why you should never accept a dare that involves slugs. Ever.

I really do not know what to make of this. Why is a doctor suing a Botox maker for getting botulism from Botox? Botox IS botulism. Which also makes me confused that the manufacturer is claiming that it cannot cause botulism. It IS botulism.

The morning coffee is lacking pants

One of the most fascinating things I have read on the Internet in a long time is this interview with an anonymous Facebook employee, where they talk largely about privacy, and a little bit about weirdos on Facebook. It’s worth reading.

New York. Subway. No pants. That’s just the way they roll.

Book burning might be out of fashion, but thepublicdomain.org argues here that gradual changes to copyright law over the past fifty years are accomplishing the same thing.
