The morning coffee satisfies your searches

May 19th, 2010 No comments

This morning’s coffee is dedicated to the multitude of searchers who find their way to the blog. I have stats that tell me what you’re looking for: eruptions, tattoos and ghostbusters. Also, I like mustaches.

So here you are, Internet. Everything you wanted to see in a morning coffee, but were afraid to ask for.

We’re back

April 18th, 2010 No comments

As you might have noticed yesterday, the Big Bad Blog is back. This is despite the great ash cloud hovering over Europe.

And as most people visiting over the last few days have been looking for volcano eruptions, I will share my favourite photo of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull, taken by Halldor Kolbeins and found at The Big Picture:

The morning coffee is your placebo

August 25th, 2009 No comments

Pharmaceutical companies are finding that the placebo effect is getting stronger with age. Hopefully it becomes so strong that one day sugar pills can cure all our ills. On a different note, can this account for the recent rise in homeopathy adherents?

The most interesting paragraph in the article (for me — there are many interesting paragraphs which may entice you), is this:
These new findings tell us that the body’s response to certain types of medication is in constant flux, affected by expectations of treatment, conditioning, beliefs, and social cues.

What does this say about “tried and tested” medicines, or traditional remedies? What is the shelf life of a cure?

It’s official, the future has arrived. Police have identified a woman’s body by scanning the bar codes on her implants.
