The morning coffee sues the experts

In 2009, there was an earthquake in Italy. 300 people died. A tragedy, you will agree.

Now seven seismologists are on trial in Italy for not having predicted that the earthquake would occur.

Let me repeat that: Now seven seismologists are on trial in Italy for not having predicted that the earthquake would occur.

In other words, the Italian government now considers knowledge without omniscience to be illegal. Be warned: if you go to Italy, feign ignorance over anything and everything, lest you be accused of being responsible for unpredictable disasters.

Amanda (Fucking) Palmer writes about seeking money directly from her audience, and not being ashamed of it. It’s a brilliant look at where the business model for the music industry is headed. The middle men should pay attention and start to revisit their practices before the majority of artists and fans become comfortable with afp’s aproach and begin to cut them out. storm_trooper_apple
banksy_steamroller Every school day, the neighbourhood children go to Lisa Snyder’s house for about an hour before the school bus comes. She is not paid for it — it’s just a favour for the other parents in the neighbourhood who (presumably) need to leave for work. The state of Michigan has told her that she’s breaking the law and needs to stop being a good neighbour.

In an attempt to match low the low standards of customer service and extra charges of their worst competitors, BA has cut free meals on short flights and reduced customers’ luggage allowance. And, beginning this week, they’ll now charge you extra to sit beside your children on the plane.

Sometimes trying to make a quick quip about the day’s news is difficult. Take this article, which tells us that Italian banks will begin to take ham and wine as collateral on loans. Why not cheese, you ask? Because they already do this with cheese. The World Italy is a strange place.

Wil Wheaton writes about the days following the making of Stand By Me: I think it’s spooky how the four of us ended up being so much like our characters: River died too young, Corey struggled like crazy to get his personal demons under control, Jerry found success and happiness, and I’m a writer.
