The morning coffee
Welcome to the 101st entry at the Big Bad Blog. Exciting.
This morning’s news is telling me that the UK government is now going to consider Open Source software on “equal footing” with proprietary solutions when it “delivers best value for money”. This is good — but only when done properly. Open source software is not necessarily as good as the proprietary kind (although it often is), and is usually unsupported. I can imagine that the UK government has a formula to determine “best value for money”, and that by plugging in £0 for the open source license, it will default to being “best value”. The change in policy ought to be accompanied by a change in this formula, or the change in policy will turn out to be a mistake.
