This morning coffee violates reality

It would appear that nature violates local realism. And if somebody could explain this whole “loopholes in physical laws” bit, I’d appreciate it. The terminology makes it sound as though physical laws are written by politicians.

It made me very happy to see this article, titled Shonky futurism: debunking Kurzweil. I wrote an essay about his book The Age of Spiritual Machines in University. It was bunk then, it’s bunk now.

The problem with the ideas proposed here are legion. But they are best summed up by this quote:

“Content and application providers should be able to know exactly what level of service they are getting especially if they are paying for it.”
-Ed Vaizy

We could write an essay on the subject of how infrastructure should serve the general population, and not specific business interests, but the Morning Coffee is not the place for such an essay. Suffice it to say that when politicians are more concerned with the well being of content providers than citizens, they do not have their priorities straight.

The morning coffee, physics, ladies and Daleks

The Bronx High School of Science has produced seven Nobel prize winners in physics. Interestingly, most of the physics-learning at the school took place outside the classroom.

The weekend coffee: Apples, time travel and burnination

If you stopped sharing on social media, would anybody care?

Would anybody even notice?

Nobody noticed when Leo Laporte’s contributions went missing. Is the lesson to keep your content in places you own? Or to go out and play in the sun?

There appears to be such a thing as attack butterflies:

“They’re giant, metallic purple fighter jets.”

They sound awesome.

In 1997, John Silveira posted an advertisement in Backwoods Home Magazine, looking for a companion to travel through time with.

And the responses keep flooding in.

Stephen Hawking has now decided that our knowledge of science is sufficient to make god unnecessary for creation — creation can occur spontaneously based on the scientific principles currently understood.
A very pregnant woman goes to the hospital, to give birth to her baby.

Doctor A thinks that the birth can proceed vaginally.
Doctor B thinks that a caesarean section is needed.

Then the two doctors get in a fistfight.

(One month, by the way. This “birth” thing is starting to sound more exciting. I should bring popcorn.)

Doing puzzles delays the onset of dementia! Yey!

BUT doing puzzles makes dementia worse when it arrives! Boo!

So … will YOU do puzzles?

Printable robot insects.
In ten years, will we be looking back at Facebook the way we look back at AOL today?

The morning coffee is not spending money

In perhaps the saddest news story we have ever borne witness to, The Huffington Post has run a story about a woman boasting that she went an entire twenty-four hours without spending any money. I do this without making an effort on a regular basis, and find it sad that somebody doing so is worth boasting about.
