For the sake of writing something …

Blogging, it turns out, is hard.

Sometimes you follow up the first mother’s day after her death with a visit from your stepfather. And then you take a week off work for a computer-free trans-atlantic trip featuring the scattering of her ashes.

When you come back to work on Monday, they tell you that they want you in Poland on Wednesday. You need to arrange everything, you go on the trip, and then suddenly it’s Friday and you’re heading into a holiday weekend.

It’s been three weeks since you’ve blogged, and you can’t even feel guilty about it, because it’s not like you’ve been squandering your blogging time watching bad television. Well, mostly not.

At least it’s Caturday.

Project guilt

We now find ourselves either five months into this Maggie-a-Day project, if you measure in photos taken. Four months, if measured on Flickr.

As any project that requires daily effort can be — and finding the time to do this, in an area with appropriate lighting, while Maggie is in a good mood is an effort — some days, the project is a grind. A day is missed, here and there.

Adding in Sleep Wars? I awoke this morning to realise that I have not taken a picture in the last two days. I am feeling some project guilt.

So here are some bonus photos for blog readers. Enjoy!

Our first picture is Maggie at five days old. Five days! We tried to put this shirt on her yesterday. It doesn’t fit any more. Now that I see her wearing it at her smallest, that makes sense.

We move next to Maggie at one month:

Maggie on her first vacation (in Wales):

Maggie at two months:

This next photo was the hardest photo to not include in the Maggie-a-Day series. It is a sweet, sweet shot of Maggie holding her grandfather’s hand:

Finally, Maggie says goodbye, as only Maggie can:

Procrastination

I take photographs. These photographs then (most often) sit on my hard drive for months before I edit them. They then sit on my hard drive for further months before they show up here or on Flickr. This is not due to being unsure about the quality of a photo, or rediscovering something I did not like the first time around (though both these things do happen). It has to do with the quantity of photos that I sometimes take and the number of hours in a day.

I do this with my writing too, only it is less obvious. Not only is it unclear when I publish something in May that I wrote it (or conceived the writing of it) in December, but there are many things which I conceive of writing that are no longer pertinent topics one or two weeks later, nevermind six months. For instance, I scribbled down thoughts on the volcano Eyjafjallajokull not long ago. My comments seem dated now, and will likely never be typed up for this blog.

Here’s proof that old photos that I have liked from the beginning do find there way here after six months. This was taken in December, just outside a little Christmas market in Berne. The Christmas decorations make it evident that it is not a recent photograph. The only way to hide it would be to wait an entire year before sharing it.

Also, it’s better when bigger, so I would suggest you click on it for a larger version.

Normally, links are posted at this time on Saturday. However, a red-eye flight does not agree with the usual schedule.

Look again, this time tomorrow.
